Project of the week is a Pipe Mount made of black ABS. This part was originally machined from solid 1020 steel and then converted to injection molded part in ABS some years later, hence the ribs. When we received the part model it was already designed to be injection molded. According to the customer mold was stuck or down for repairs overseas and customer needed a quick way to replenish inventory. We slightly modified the part to be machine friendly again so we can produce this part until mold issues were resolved. This part is roughly 4-1/4 x 3" x 1/2, no special features or finishes to worry about here. Very simple part that now had a tight delivery date being out of stock, we machined 530pcs and then shadow shipped the product to various places.
End Mills and Chamfer Mills were solid carbide from Data Flute CNC with standard High-Speed Drills and taps for the mounting screws. We used Mic6 aluminum plate for fixturing in order to hold down and machine 10pcs per cycle. Part tolerance except for the large bore was +/- 0.015 and a machine finish with chamfer edges is fine for this part. The large bore requires +0.015/-0.000 tolerance on the diameter. This project started the week of 08/25/06 but went on for weeks until the mold was repaired, and shipments overseas started coming over again. We would like to thank our customer for allowing us to share this project with people who value the manufacturing talent that is out there...
